Rwanda Football Association (Ferwafa) will sign a long-term agreement with Netherlands side Feyenoord in a bid to improve football development in Rwanda.
Ferwafa president Vincent Degaule Nzamwita met with the club’s International Relations Manager Gido Vader on Tuesday to conclude the plans aimed at youth academy football in Rwanda.
Rwanda’s Ambassador to the Netherlands, Jean Pierre Karabaranga was also in attendance at the club’s headquarters in Rotterdam.
“The meeting was aimed at seeing how possible we can put into effect what we discussed in our previous meeting and what needs to be added such that we cement a long relationship with Feyenoord,” Nzamwita said on the Ferwafa website.
“Since we are planning to have a firm U-15 tournament, their technical assistance in every aspect will be vital for the growth of football in the country. We believe soon we will have a pact in place to start benefiting from their technical assistance.”
“We also thank Ambassador Karabaranga for his support in ensuring that Feyenoord comes on board to develop the country’s football sector.”
Ferwafa launched youth leagues (U-15 and U-13) for both girls and boys last year but the same is yet to be implemented this year with a worrying significant absence in the upcoming Caf African U-17 Championship qualifiers.
The 14-time Eredivisie champions have produced world-class football players like Robin Van Persie currently featuring for Fenerbahce in Turkey having played for Arsenal and Manchester United in the English Premier League.
Giovanni van Brockhorst, Johan Cruyff, Ruud Gullit, Dirk Kuyt, Bruno Martins Indi and Ron Vlaar are some of the notable names to have played at the famous Dutch club.
The Feyenoord Youth Football Academy is also working with Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa and Vietnam on the same youth program.
Feyenoord’s youth academy commonly referred to as Varkenoord, is the best developmental system in the Netherlands, winning the Rinus Michels Award for best youth academy five years in a row since 2009.
Varkenoord produced 11 players at the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil, more than any other academy in the world.
