RUSSIAN FOOTBALLER SHOT DEAD

An unidentified gunman has murdered Russian
football player Hassan Magomedov when he was
walking to his car.
The 20-year-old Anzhi Makhachkala defender
died on his way to hospital. For now, the motive
behind the crime remains unknown.
The killing took place in a highly unstable region
of Russia called Dagestan in the North Caucasus
area of the country. Dagestan is victim to hard
firefighting between those that wish to see the
region an independent Caucasian Emirate and
the Russian security forces. Added to this bitter
conflict are organized crime gangs.
Magomedov was a key figure in his team. So far
this season, he had played in 16 of Anzhi's 18
matches.
The Russian team, in which Samuel Eto'o played
until 2013, was relegated last season to Russia's
second division.
